Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel

My sis is on the news AGAIN! :) If you click on this and scroll down to the bottom right where it says "Featured Videos" and then click on the Madison Area Music Awards link, you can see my sis and 2 of the other Getaway Drivers (Bob Manor on the left, Steve Pingry on the right) performing "Won't Ask Why."

Cool!!

We actually SKIPPED our class and sparring tonight in order to go see a bat presentation. Why, why, WHY did I not think to bring my camera? Wah! There were some cool bats there, and the last Batguest was a 1 day old "big brown bat." She was teensy. And very, very cute. I am SO putting up a bat house. (Yes, this is HIGHLY encouraged by bat conservators.)

Some Batfacts:

Bats are responsible for pollinating agave plants (Tequila!) and saguaro cacti. In fact, they are the ONLY pollinators of the saguaro. Additionally, bats are replenishing the rainforests (not so much here in MI, though) and they eat 600 to 1,200 mosquitos and other bugs per hour!! A few cities around here have passed resolutions asking homeowners to put up bat houses in order to help stop the spread of West Nile disease.

If you want to learn more about bat conservation and bathouses, or if you'd like to help out by sponsoring a bat, check out the OBC. Or go here for lots of fun Batfacts.

I kinda think the OBC should team up with these guys. Don't you?

I thought my Tall Chick radar was going off! And yup - she has a post!

I've always like bats for some reason. They are oddly cute in that weird little critter way. And I had no idea that they did so much good! I knew they did good, but not all of that!

And when I read OBC, I immediately though to myself "You down with OPP? (yeah, you know me!)"

LOL! That could be their new tagline: "You down with OBC?" ^_^

I think bats are cute, too. :) We learned last night that there is a new drug made from an enzyme that has been isolated from the saliva of Vampire bats. It being developed for use in treating blood clots and is called - I kid you not - Draculin. ^_^

My Dad and I keep trying out different designs of bat houses...and the little buggers keep ignoring them. :(

I was just talking to a friend who had the same problem.

The OBC site has plans for their recommended bathouse. I was surprised to learn that they need to be 100 degrees (F) inside, so full sun is a must. The speaker also said that painting them black helps. Oh, and they have to be at least 15 feet off the ground.

I hope you and your little bats will be very happy...not sure it would go down well here

Candace, I couldn't find the link to your sister

It's kind of an annoying website. If you go to the bottom of the page, the last box in the right-hand column should be "Featured Videos" (it's blue) Right now it's the last link in that box (Madison Area Music Awards)

Hope that helps! :)

The temp thing was the problem with our first attempt...we put it in the shade.
My Dad has a log post, that he has his birdfeeder nailed to. Several years ago, he put metal stovepipe around the post, to keep the squirrels out of the feeder. The bats LOVE to nest in there. It meets the heat requirements, but it's close to the ground. I'm thinking of putting up something similar.

I LOVE bats!!! We have a bat house and we are trying to figure out the best place to put it...it is wooden--do you know if we HAVE to paint it or can we just hang it up plain wood?

I love bats too. They are cool. We have a lot of bats in my area and even a bat rescue organization. Good post. Like bees, they need our protection.

btw- caught the sister vid. How very wonderful to have such talent in your family. She has a nice voice and a pretty smile.

Tshsmom - Ha!! So funny that they chose the easy to install thing that wasn't even meant for them! ^_^

Slade - From what I can tell on teh site, if it gets enough sun, it doesn't have to be painted.

Claire - Yes! Just like the bees, they do a lot of pollinating for us. And they're cute, to boot! ^_^

Thank you for your kind words about my sis. :) I agree, and will be passing your comment along to her. :)

Bats are sweet. We see them quite a bit around here at dusk. I should put up some bat houses. That is a lot of bugs! It's just too bad they don't eat gophers. I'm counting on the owls for that.

While I appreciate what bats are doing for us, I am more inclined to send a beautifully-penned thank you note rather than invite them into my backyard.

yeah... got it...

she's so beautiful and talented... guess it must run in the family

Where I used to live out in South-East Asia, the fruit bat was a local delicacy. I will always remember seeing them hanging upside down on the side-street stalls. I never tried them, though. Oh no...

I clicked on your sis. Your family is very cool and talented, C. :)

I am at bat with what you're saying, Chall Tick. Bats are tres kewl.

I forwarded the link to yo Sis' TV appearance to my friend, Amy who lives in Vancouver, WA but is from Madison, WI. She will mega dig that.

Now to the bat page!

Diesel - I had to laugh at the gophers thing. But wait! Maybe gophers are good, too! They sure are cute.

Jay - I'm sure they will appreciate the beautifully-penned note. ^_^ Not many people care enough to send snail mail these days.

Ann - You are too kind. :) I'll pass that along. :)

Egan - are you poking me with a stick?

Gawpo - I think he was poking me with a stick.

Winters - are you going to share about where, exactly, you lived? Would that have something to do with that picture of you in that shiny clothing?

You are too sweet. :)

Gawpo - There is a big Madison-Washington thing I think. I've talked about it a bit with Egan. I know Madisonians go to WA, but I don't know it Washingtonians ever go to Madison. It could be a one-way thing I guess.

Hope you like the bat page. :)

Completely unrelated comment: I finally saw Boondock Saints. Now I know what all the fuss is about.

"There was a fire fight!"

Oooh! Awesome!! :) The thing I found with that one is that each time I watch it, I notice something new and appreciate it even more. It is my all time fave. :) And there are so many quotable lines.

"Where YOU goin'? NOwhere!"

"Well start the ass-kissin' with you!"

"I might be wantin' a bagel with my coffee." ^_^

"Kinda makes me feel like Riverdancing."

I'm glad you liked it. :)Did you watch any of the extra stuff? The phone call with mom is notable mainly for its nakididity. Oooh la la! :)
