Once in Blue Moon

Blue Moon is an ice cream flavour I have always just taken for granted. Imagine my surprise, then, to get an article from my mom stating that the flavour is purely a Midwestern America thing. I first remember getting it as a treat after vaccinations when I was 4. We had to have QUITE a few vaccinations to go overseas, and our parents promised my sis and I ice cream cones after each round to lessen the sting. I remember my mom and dad praising me for not crying each time, but I also remember finally breaking down for the last round. I can still hear my mom saying "I think she's finally just HAD it with these shots," and I had. But I still got my ice cream cone -- it wasn't a bribe against crying, just something calculated to make us feel better. Or maybe, now that I look at it from my parents' point of view, something to make my parents feel better. I think I chose Blue Moon every single time. :) I guess that would have been in Berrien Springs, Michigan, at Mission Institute. We lived in Cicero, Indiana at the time, but I don't remember if they had Blue Moon in Indiana.

I know I've seen and had the stuff lots in Wisconsin -- it's a regular flavour at
Babcock Hall on the UW-Madison campus -- and here in the greater Detroit Metro area you can get it. But come to think of it, I'm not sure I ever saw it in California. Neil Gaiman apparently eats it. Wikipedia has an article on it. Amazon sells it. (as gourmet food?!?!)

Have you tried it? Have you heard of it? Enquiring Minds want to know.

Triva Fact: our next Blue Moon here in the Americas will be on May 31. Guess what I'll be eating. :)

I haven't heard of Blue Moon but it sure looks delicious!

I'd rather hear it from you (instead of researching it): Does it have pistachio?

Side note: Spumoni is another one of those regional ice-creams not known in certain parts of the US, like the west.

I've always thought of it as slightly minty bubble gum, but Froot Loop does describe it pretty well. I've had pistachio once or twice, but don't know it well enough to say whether it tastes like that. Some people say it does, though.

I didn't know that about spumoni! I've had it, but have no idea what flavour it is, either, LOL!

I guess you will be eating....CHEESE on the blue moon!

I don't think we have that in Nebraska unless Superman icecream counts. I don't think it does. Now I want some ice cream. Grazie!

Never heard of it.

Never heard of Blue Moon ice cream. I've lived in Texas, Missouri, Kansas, Virginia, Louisiana . . . . My husband (from Nebraska) hasn't heard of it either.

I've never heard of it. But then, I don't have the habit of putting blue things in my mouth, just as a general rule.

I was just about to ask about Blue Moon ice cream. To me it sounds like bubble gum ice cream minus the actual flecks of chewing gum. Yummy.

Have you taken the kids to see Mimsy yet? You should. I saw it Friday night here in Florida. It's very cute. It does take place in Seattle, but is yet another flick filmed in Vancouver and not Seattle.

I haven't heard of it either. I've lived in Kansas, Florida, and Washington. In KS, I worked at a Baskin Robbins, so I know a little bit about ice cream in that part of the world.

I'm a chocolate ice cream kind of girl. Bubble gum-my stuff was always a bit too much for me.

~d Bleu cheese, of course. :) Or is it green?

Amanda - Superman is different. Though meaybe not completely dissimilar.

Tshsmom - I think parts of MN are supposed to have it. Maybe near the WI border?

Sighs - how about in Turkey? ^_^

Jay - Probably a sound policy, with few exceptions. :)

Egan - Are you pulling my leg again. Pull the right one.

We have not yet attended The Last Mimsy (is it still called that) though we got an invite to a screening through the DIA. But tickets were like $5 for kids and $10 for adults, so I don't see that happening. We'll wait for the DVD. :) I'd love to hear a little more about it in the meantime.

Kitkat - Wow! You've covered the whole country! Yes, I think working at a Baskin Robbins would have exposed you to it if they had it in KS. I, too, am more of a chocolate fiend. But every now and then I try something different. (though often I end up wishing I'd gotten something chocolate after all :) )

I've never had it and now I'm completely craving some strange new flavor of ice cream!

Here in Washington the Blue Moon is not known to me. Spumoni I can get though.
I should clarify, the lunar phenomonen is known to me, not the dairy concoction.
Sounds good though

Ldbug - it's a good day for ice cream here! Hopefully you're having ice cream weather, too. :)

Logo - It must be a dairy phenomenon. It seems to be much more rare than I'd ever guessed. :-P

I forgot that I also currently live in NY :) However, I haven't really experienced their ice cream selection here. A situation that must be remedied soon!

THE MAN on THE MOON!
(hee hee!)

Not pulling your leg this time. I make no jokes when it comes to ice cream.

Kitkat - I think it's nice enough out to start checking out th eice cream scene. :)

~d - Is he still there? Poor guy!

Egan - You're a lot like MuNKi in that respect. I suppose the Monkey/MuNKi thing is no coincidence.

Duh, you're finally piecing things together.

This is the first I've heard of this. I grew up in NYC, lived in VA, DE and now GA and it's new to me.

Looks good (says the Atkins dieter)

Egan - but MuNKi ne parle pas français.

Jali - Ooh. Does that mean no ice cream? Wah! :-(

egan said...

Well I can teach him French if he's interested.

Please remove this post as I'm getting very hungry looking at it. Thank you.

Egan - interesting proposition. Do I get to watch?

I shan't! Go eat already!

Oh I am so cursed! I LOVE ice cream. It's probably my favorite food in the world. And it makes me puke. Dammit!
