Invention is the Father of Necessity

We have a new toy. And when I say "we," I mean GuTTer MuNKi. OK, maybe me, too. It's called Sirocco, and as soon as MuNKi became aware of its existence, he became simultaneously aware of our burning need to own one.

Apparently this will allow us to suck all of our CDs into a hard drive ( I believe that MuNKi will be setting up a dedicated hard drive for this porpoise) and play them over the stero from any computer in the house. Which means - hooray - no more crappy audio for stuff I download into Phantom (my laptop), among other things. The stereo will be like a ginormous iPod with playlists and all that. Yummy. Lucky for me, GuTTer MuNKi is a technogeek. Ladies, if you marry a technogeek, you will be assured of having the latest toys with none of the work or associated post-purchase guilt. Hooray! Another bonus - we can stash all the CDs in boxes in the basement once they're sucked in. Ooh la la!

In completely unrelated news, I finally won
my latest finger-wrestling match with the piano. I'm not saying it's beautiful or anything yet, but at least I'm hitting all of the right notes now, and (often) none of the wrong ones. I like this part because there are all kinds of notes where they don't belong. All credit for that goes to Mr. Dario Marianelli, whose every piece seems to include doublets. I don't actually know if they're called doublets. They're like triplets, but there are only two. Maybe I should call them twins. It's in 9/8 time and considering that I know very little about musical theory, maybe I'm playing it completely wrong. I'll have to get my P&P back (enter site to listen to some of his stuff) and give it a listen.

I clicked the Gutter MunkII link. No nakedness.

Which one? Actually, they all include no nakedness. Sorry to disappoint.

Why do you want sucky CDs?

(I'm not really clueless, I just play it on the internet)

C said...

All the sucky CDs belong to MuNKi. ^_^

I see it's back. I'm stoked Blogger fixed its issues. I need to find those other blogs of yours.

Sirocco eh? There's this thing that Apple made a couple years ago called AirTunes. It does a very similar thing, allowing us to play music via our wireless router. Yeah.

I love the first Gutter MunkI link. Have you seen the Boondock Saints yet?

I'm stoked, too. At least for the next 4.5 minutes until it goes down again. Good luck finding anything in Blogger. ;)

AirTunes - very cool! Beats an AirBiscuit any day!

There's nothing like a couple of stormtroopers getting down to brighten one's day. Boondock Saints? I hear it's got some kind of cult following. I should probably see it someday. Funny you should mention it. I think that first link is actually from the film.

otkaic Oatcake for the fonetikally challenjed

No way, a link to the Boondock Saints? How did I miss that? The subconscious is quite amazing sometimes.

I need some new tech since I don't even have a CD player anymore!!

Congrats on winning the battle w/the keys:-)

I'm waiting for the audio piano post with trembling anticipation, C.

C said...

ldbug - thank you. :) No CD player? Yikes!!

Winters - tremble no longer! It's there in the orange link, but it takes a little while to load.

Crap, I will make sure I never say a bad word about Boondock Saints again. I don't want you to ignore my comments Candace. My bad.

I think Blogger did that so that we'd all convert to Beta. All the Beta blogs were still working.

My guys are computer geeks. I'm the AV techno geek in our family.

D'oh!! Please accept my most humble apologies, Egan. And, yeah, don't be dissin' the Saints. ;)

Tshsmom - I'm scared to try Beta because new things always are t3h suck and they break. Also, I find that whole privacy box for the comments is highly annoying. You have the best of both worlds in geekiness!

Egan - I feel so bad, I'm giving you another comment. You are my favourite poo thrower.

Are you playing Cindra's word game?

egan said...

I might play Cindra's word game, but the talented writers such as yourself put me to shame. Do you have your scarf yet?

C said...

You should definitely play! It's fun to read everyone's. :) I could never put you to shame, but thank you for the compliment anyway. No scarf yet, but mail here is not terribly fast.

My submission for this word game was inspired by your storms post. Even though it goes in a completely different direction.

Congrats on your latest conquest with the piano. What do the notes you are calling "doublets" look like? Maybe I can tell you the correct term. Or you can call them doublets. Whatever allows you to remember them. Piano is a great instrument. I am very glad that my mother made me learn how to play.

C said...

Thanks! I would LOVE to know what they are! They look like 8th notes with a "2" written above each group of 2. With the 9/8 time the 8th notes usually come in 3s except for these, which come in 2s. 6 of them fill one measure (still in 9/8 time) with no rests. If I haven't described it well, I'll take a picture. :)

C said...

er - 3 pairs of 2, that is - 6 notes, total, while there are 9 of the normal 8th notes to fill the measure

I didn't get a submission in so I will be casting a vote for your entry, if I can figure out which one it is.

C said...

No cheating! :) Just vote for your fave. (especially if it's mine ;) )

Ok - what kind of music are you playing? Damn - I've been playing for almost 20 years. Anyway, it's called a "Duplet". So, you were very close calling it a doublet.

C said...

Thanks! :) These are in the book for the Pride and Prejudice (2006) soundtrack. This is the first time I've ever encountered duplets, but they appear in alomost every song in the book. Well, it seems like almost every one any way. I guess Mr. Marianelli is fond of them. :-P

I avoid anything in 9/8 time. :) Glad that you're tackling it, though!!
