Would You Put This in Your Mouth?

So I always try to get the Sunday Freep for the coupons, and every now and then I put my fingers over my eyes and peep through them while I do a quick scan of the articles. This one* caught my eye because it has pictures (at least in the paper it does) and, well, that's how I roll. ^_^

There are 3 recipes given in the article: Individual Zucchini and Cheddar Frittatas, Spinach and Black Bean Burritos with Salsa, and Brainy Brownies.

Naturally, I wanted to know what might confer intelligence on a batch of brownies, or, to proceed down a more frightening avenue of thought, what might turn a brownie into "brain food." (This is the point at which horrifying images of fish paste began to rear their disturbing heads.)

My sense of morbid curiosity was richly rewarded when I read on the list of ingredients: "1/2 cup Purple Puree (see note)." Of course I did immediately see note, because I know full well that, whatever ingredients Good Brownies are allowed to contain, none of them are purple. "Purple Paste" turns out to be made from blueberries, lemon juice, sugar, water, and -- wait for it. . .

spinach! Or, if you don't have spinach, you can use collard greens. Yum!

The point of these brownies is, apparently, to trick your kids by "hiding foods kids should eat in the dishes they will eat." (emphasis mine) I have an idea; how about giving real food to your kids instead of fast food and junk food, and leaving the sacrosanct realm of Brownies the hell alone?!?

Save the spinach brownies for Rehabbers, I say. ^_^

*If you look at the first comment there, it may have been left by me. I also may have typoed "frittatas." Imagine.

There are 2 things I absolutely love about this post:
1. Tim Curry
2. Your link to the Fish Heads video. OMG, that song was what we opened every meeting of our speech & drama club with!! And one year at a theatre convention, that was our presentation - we had a sing-a-long to Fish Heads.

One thing I don't like about this post (and apparently you don't either:
1. SPINACH IN BROWNIES?? Blasphemy.

Amanda - Tim Curry is a mortal god. ^_^ The man is simply fabulous!

Isn't that vid a blast from the past? Can't tell you how many times fragments of that have been stuck in my head.

Definitely BLASPHEMY!!!! :)

OK, hello, my name is logo and I have zucchinni trauma. My mom used to do stuff like this.
Leave the veggies out of the chocolate, people!
It's just WRONG.
Hold me

Was I the only kid in the world who liked vegetables? Not cooked, mind you, but anything raw was good.

A friend of mine told me that when he was growing up, his mom made reading a special treat (if you're good, you can read your book tonight!), so he always looked forward to it. I told him that he should do the same with broccoli when his kid is old enough :)

Logo - LOL! Exactly!!! :)

Kitkat - I don't know what people are doing. Just offering once and giving up, maybe? My kids BEG me to buy broccoli, LOL! (or "trees") They love asparagus. Salad? YUM! Peas? Yes, PLEASE! They didn't love everything at first taste, but we kept trying with the stuff they didn't like until they did! And we didn't befoul chocolate to do it. ^_^

I always put shredded zuchini in cakes and brownies. It's full of vitamins and it cooks in so you never know it's there.

I would kiss Tim Curry, but I don't know about putting him in my mouth. ;)

Sounds DELICIOUS! I wanna me some!

Tshsmom - really? You don't get the shreds like you get in zucchini bread?

ROTFL! Nice one! ^_^

Cindra - Ack! You need a real Brownie. ^_^

Right from the start I fed my kids all kinds of veggies & fruits. None are picky eaters and they are true believers in eating healthfully. No disgusting brocco-brownies around here, we eat the real thing. Hey, everything in moderation.

I have one little guy that won't touch a vegetable or a fruit. I don't sneak them into his food though, but just keep on trying to get him to eat real food. I would hate for him to give up the few foods he does eat because I tried to trick him with vegetables in the brownies! Interesting stuff!

TG - Hahahhaha!! ^_^

Yeah, spinach brownies. The stuff of nightmares. **shiver**

Claire - Exactly!!! Can I have an AMEN? ^_^

Tori - Yes! If you try to trick him, he may never trust you again!
